phonology (phonological): the study of the sounds of language. Phonetics is the part of phonology that deals with how the sounds are pronounced and what they are like acoustically, but phonology also includes the study of how the sounds function systematically in the language. Other important parts of this field include the analysis of phonemes, the changes of one sound to another in certain contexts (morphophonemic and allophonic alternation), syllable structure, stress, intonation, and tone. [Spanish: fonología]
