independent: not dependent, able to occur alone. For instance in the word "hands", the morpheme "hand" is independent, because it can occur alone, but the suffix "-s" 'plural' is dependent. The combined word "hands" is also independent. The relative clause [that walked through the door] is dependent, while the sentence [The man [that walked through the door] was tall] is independent. [Spanish: independiente]
