codex (plural: codices): a manuscript volume, especially one in which ancient works are preserved. The codices referred to most frequently in relation to the indigenous languages of Mexico are those which were made in the first decades or centuries after European contact, which preserve examples of prehispanic art and writing and much valuable historical and linguistic information. [Spanish: códice]
