Abstract:
Description:
The purpose of this study is to give a brief summary of the investigations that have been undertaken about the language of the Tepehuan people, from those in the north in the state of Chihuahua to those in the south, primarily in the state of Durango. There are actually few linguistic studies of Tepehuan. The first was Arte de la lengua tepeguana by Benito Rinaldini at the beginning of the 18th century. This was of great value because it appears to have been written before the northern and southern variants separated languages. The next study dates from the beginning of the 20th century when Alden Mason studied what is now an extinct variant called Tepecano. The remaining studies were completed during the last forty years by various researchers. I summarize all the studies that I am acquainted with here, both published and unpublished. The summary is organized in accordance with the three principal areas of descriptive linguistic research: texts, the lexicon, and grammatical analysis. At the end I present an alphabetized list of all the references cited.
