Description:
Mixtec pronoun systems divide into two types: those that have a singular vs. plural distinction in first and second person, and those that have a familiar vs. honorific distinction instead. Honorific pronouns are found only in the part of the Highland region where socially-stratified city-states existed in the Postclassic period, and along the trade route between this area and Mexico City. Systems with a singular-plural distinction are found on all sides of the honorific system. This paper proposes that the number distinctión is older, and that the honorific system is an innovation that arose in response to the stratified society.
