El mixteco que se habla en Magdalena Peñasco tiene tres niveles de tono, más tres tonos flotantes, que son alto, bajo y alto limitado. Estos tonos flotantes se presentan al final de una palabra y afectan al tono de la palabra de la derecha. Además, un tono alto en la primera sílaba de una raíz puede ser débil o fuerte; el tono alto débil se cambia a bajo después de un tono bajo. Hay varios procesos generales en que un tono se extiende o se mueve, pero también hay irregularidad en la manera en que estos procesos se aplican a algunas raíces. Un texto analizado muestra la mayoría de los cambios tonales en un contexto normal. El estudio también incluye una breve comparación con el sistema tonal de algunas variantes del mixteco del distrito de Tlaxiaco y con el mixteco del período colonial.

The Mixtec spoken in Magdalena Peñasco has three tone levels, plus three different floating tones, high, low, and limited high, which occur at the end of a word and affect the tone of a following word. In addition, a high tone on the first syllable of a root may be either weak or strong; weak high tones change to low following a low tone. In addition to several regular processes involving tone spread and movement, there are a number of irregularities in the way these tone changes are realized in certain roots. A short analyzed text shows most of these tone changes in a normal language context. The paper also includes a brief comparison with the tone systems of other varieties of Mixtec in the Tlaxiaco area, and with the Mixtec of the Colonial period.
